Cheap Lex/Nex Alternative
Anyone ever hear of a news text service called "XChange"?
I've just got through reading an article (Monitoring Times, July 96) that
describes this as a full text, searchable news service having access to all
major wire services (Reuters, ITAR-Tass, Deutsche-Press Agentur, Kyoda News
Int'l, Xinhua, Notimex, AGence France Presse, etc.).
Unlike L/N, the service also provides access to all types of compressed
software, ongoing weather and financial information, and even lesson plans
and teaching materials. It's part of the Cable in the Classroom project.
System Requirements:
386 or higher IBM compatible PC
4 megs of RAM
Hard Drive, with 6 megs free
Cable TV, or Satellite C-Band (preferably Primestar), Access
Cost: (Here's the cool part!)
Interface Kit (one time cost of about $150)
Subscription Rates: Free for the first year (after purchase of interface),
after that depends on cooperation of your local cable company, (could
be free, if part of your company's basic package) but is listed at no
more than $59.40 (!) per year.
Anyone interested in pursuing this low cost alternative to L/N, or in just
finding out more, should contact XChange at 1-800-7PC-NEWS.
Having Fun With Tech,
Bear
