East Asia and Shortwave Listening

Any case anyone hasn't noticed, daily news coverage of East Asian politics by
western news outlets is notoriously weak.

If you'd like a taste of what's going on recently in this area, let me
suggest listening to the daily national news broadcasts from these countries
on high frequency shortwave radio. The best station for topic awareness
purposes seems to be Radio Australia, which seems to be recognized as the
leader in Asian news coverage. They can easily be heard from around midnight
well into mid-morning on any small multiband radio that includes a shortwave
band. Other significant Asian news broadcasters (in English) include China
Radio International, R. Japan (NHK), R. Thailand, and even the BBC, since
they have local relays in Singapore.

If you think that transcripts of these broadcasts can easily be pulled down
from Lex/Nex, think again. Only the BBC transcripts seem to make it and about
85% of Asian broadcast news items don't make it into L/N transcripts. Most of
the rest of this news just doesn't make it to the West in any other form.

I always love it when my interests overlap!
