Re: SE Asia, a blast from the past...

Warning: this posting is just a quick story. It contains little or no
useful information.

joeb@media-net.net (Boyle, Joseph) said that the 1954-1955 topic was

> RESOLVED: "That the United States should extend diplomatic
> recognition to the communist government of China."

Heard this from a history professor old enough to remember this topic:

Because of the strict rules regarding adherence to offical US policy
during the Cold War, neither the Naval Academy nor the Air Force Academy
were allowed to debate this topic for fear that they would contradict
this carved-in-stone policy of the US government.

After the season was done, an unnamed pleb (I think that's the term) at
the Naval Academy wrote to the topic committee to suggest that the
1955-1956 topic be "RESOLVED: That the Air Force and Naval Academies be
allowed to debate the topic RESOLVED: That the United States should
extend diplomatic recognition to the communist government of China."

This topic, unfortunately, was not adopted.
