Tuna's heart

i thought Tuna expressed himself admirably.

i don't think anyone has doubted that Tuna cares very much about
students and debaters in particular. and his recent post regarding NDI
scholarships shows again that he cares very very much about the NDI and
about debaters. i don't know of anyone who has accused Tuna of being in
it for the money. (not that i have ever had a problem with capitalism
anyway)

since my charges of a potential conflict of interest raised several
months ago in discussing the topic release date seem to be a matter of
continuing concern for Tuna, i have recently been giving considerable
thought to publicly apologizing. i am sorry that this matter is a
continuing source of hurt for Tuna. however, i am not sorry that this
issue was raised by me. i did not then and do not now intend to insult
or to hurt: i tried hard to make that clear then and hope this does so
now.

there is a potential conflict of interest and certainly a potential for
the appearance of a conflict of interest when someone cares deeply about
both a summer institute and the community they represent as an officer.
it is certainly possible that in some situations what is best for the
NDI is not best for CEDA and vice versa. this seems to me a rather
obvious proposition.

well, so what? well, beats me. mostly not much. it seems to me that
recognizing the potential conflict largely or wholely resolves it.
that's all.

as i mentioned above, i think Tuna expressed his pain in having to make
difficult decisions about scholarship awards eloquently and well.

p.s.: a belated but heartfelt congratulations to Vermont for a
spectacular CEDA Nationals. as someone who saw Jethro in one of his
very first novice debates, it was a pleasure to see him develop into one
of the best debaters in the country. a coaching staff that can make a
punk like him as good as he was has my utmost respect. of course
Annalee was always good: no big coaching challenge with that one.
