Re: Problem Area

Hello Campers,
Just thought we'd respond to the latest stuff regarding topics and such.
Love Child seems to have a point to me about the economy/politics/foreign
affairs self-perpetuating cycle. It seems that this rather narrow focus
of topic areas gives a definite edge to debaters with majors in those
fields, which would have a tendency to dictate academic focus.
Personally, I'd love to be a P.E. major. I think that in the debate
community we haven't been adequately evaluating the ramifications of the
news we could read every day in the sports page. I bet most of you don't
even know that Fernando Valenzuela just came out of retirement!!!
How about these for sample resolutions:

Resolved: that Hall of Fame selection for professional athletes in the
United States ought to consider non-sports-related activities.

Resolved: that militaristic sports reflect a militaristic culture.

Resolved: that professional sports organizations in the United states
should increase regulation of athlete recruiting violations

Resolved: that drug testing for professional athletes would be desireable.

Resolved: that gambling on professional sports ought to be legalized in
the United States.

If anybody else has any ideas for resolutions, that's also great, we'd
love to hear 'em. Also: Don't take this as a massive lobbying move for
a sports topic...although I'd like to see one, there are lots of others
that sound interesting as well...which brings up the death penalty topic
Ken Broda-Bahm posted a couple of days ago. I think it has a lot of
potential, for all the reasons he listed, but have one problem/inquiry
about it. There is not a timeframe on the resolution. Thus, could an
affirmative claim we would overturn a death penalty conviction
posthumously or what? This might unlimit an otherwise nicely limited
resolution.

Thanks for listenin',
