Election and Voting Results
In case you are interested, the Constitutional Amendment to change
eligibility for novice and junior division students to earn CEDA
points PASSED by an 83-38 margin.
In other election news,.
As of June 1st, Gary Larson officially became the Executive-Secretary
of CEDA. Thanks again for all your support.
There are a lot of very good people in our world who care a lot about
what we do. Be caring and patient with each other. If we lose the
ability to dialogue with each other the centrifugal forces which are
threatening to unravel CEDA will do so. This organization cannot
succeed if it serves only one interest group or another. The traditional
strength of CEDA has been in a relatively open environment where we
discuss our differences and reach reasonable accomodations.
I am a bit amazed at the short institutional memories of people who have
forgotten that it was the disregard for consensus and compromise and the
preoocupation of the NDT with the tournament and not the schools participating
in debate which caused the majority of schools in the country to move to CEDA.
Debate was not well served when there was only one national organization.
Diversity is good. Letting a thousand flowers bloom is good. Having many
forensic organizations, each devoted to their own philosophy is good. Be
very careful before going backwards into rapproachment with an organization
which does not have an enviable track record in supporting middle class values.
Any school is free to join the NDT or CEDA and most likely NEDA for that
matter. Let people vote with their feet.
I care a lot about debate. I have an awful lot of friends in this
organization. I hope we can find cool heads to avoid the ad homenim argument
that currently characterizes this listserv.
