Re: Randi's revenge

In-Reply-To: ORUNIX:ceda-l@cornell.edu's message of 06-02-94 15:46

This is in response to Will Baker's posting concerning CEDA-L and dismissing
Randi's contributions.
I do not doubt for a second the accuracy of the findings of the study regarding
the dismissal of women's ideas in meetings etc.. However, it would behoove
those of us concerned with solvency of such not to trivialize actual cases of
sexism (whether the result of socialization or not) with innocuous incidents
that have nothing to do with gender discrimination.

Although I took the time out to send a message to Randi, I seriously doubt that
her gender had anything to do with omissions of her name. Email postings are
often done in haste and like face-to-face conversations we are too often
considering our responses when obstensibly receiving other's communication.
Don't you think that by pointing to such incidents as the oversight of people
on CEDA-L as gender bias it hurts rather than helps the cause?
