Northern Iowa Tournament
The UNI tournament will, as usual, be on the second to the last weekend
in September -- Registration on Friday the 19th, prelims on 20 and 21,
elims on 22.
The invitation will be in the mail around the end of the month. For those
who want some details now, here are the highlights:
1) An open division of team policy debate, 8 prelims (we think more rounds
at the beginning of the year are good), with 5 elims (all teams 5-3 or
better will clear).
2) A junior division of team policy debate, 8 prelims, a number of elims
appropriate for the size of the division.
3) Mutual preference judge assignment.
4) Coffee and bagels each morning, coaches receptions each evening.
5) Silver to all teams in elims, and to the top speakers in each division.
As I noted a few months ago, the Waterloo Holiday Inn inadvertently booked
a convention for that weekend, so we will not be able to use their facility
this year (however, we have already booked the facility for 1998). Thus,
this year we will again use the CEDAR FALLS HOLIDAY INN UNIVERSITY CENTER.
The phone number there is 319 277 2230. Ask for the block of rooms for the
Season Opener. The Waterloo Holiday Inn may have individual rooms available
for those desiring to return to that facility.
Due to the hotel situation, elims will again be held on the UNI campus on
Monday.
If you don't mind small planes, book reservations directly to the Waterloo
airport. We find the cost is about the same as larger airports in most
cases, and is far more convenient. Other airport options, listed in order
of distance from Cedar Falls, are 1) Cedar Rapids, 2) Des Moines,
3 Minneapolis-St. Paul. If you really want to be adventuresome, you can
follow Georgetown's lead and fly into O'Hare, or Redlands' lead and fly
to Kansas City (we don't recommend either option due to the driving time).
We look forward to seeing our debate friends in Cedar Falls in two months.
