Re: Answ NEJM
Your long missive, re: coaches, abuses, sexism, etc., included a key line
that really has far-reaching implications, beyond the current course of
debate:
"Pam's personal narrative - a PARENT [caps mine] wanting both excellence and
rationality."
Perhaps, the fault lies not in those coaches of both boys and girls --- for I
believe that ample evidence exists that the abuse is not simply of the
frail, weak-willed, low self-esteem, malleable female child but of boys as
well. (I have already provoked Isaac's response by my suggestion that
wrestling takes its toll on some boys.) Kids need parents who know what is
going on in their lives, and kids need parents who consider the child's well
being a primary concern. "Pam's personal narrative" is a good example of the
result of such involvement. I never expected my son's Little League or Babe
Ruth coaches to have a personal interest in his well being beyond his
function with the team. I never expected my son's high school football or
track coaches nor Forensic or Debate coaches to have a personal interest in
his well being. Competition is demanding. Competition SHOULD be demanding.
A coach has a team to consider. I have my child to consider.
Enough for me.
