Although this will possibly not be remembered as well as
the Munich massacre, this tragedy is the represents the antithesis of
the spirit of the games. During the ancient games, a truce was
observed. Now it seems as if they are a magnet for violence.
It would be easy to proclaim the fall of humanity and become sullen
and resigned to our fate as pawns in the power plays of governments,
big businesses, and terrorists. We need look no further, however,
than Kerri Strug to see the determination of the spirit. She did not
falter. Should we hold ourselves to a lesser standard? We can look
at all of the 11,000 athletes who have come to our country in the
spirit of togetherness. Even in defeat, they are all champions for
simply running the race.
We will defy the cowards. The games will continue. We will
continue. I refuse to cower before terrorists. Kerri won't let me.
Big Dave
