Re: ans Snider

I feel a bit uncomfortable singing the praises of Bela or the rest of the
gymnastic community. One the one hand it was an awesome night, and it
was really tough to not wave my US flag and get into the spirit. On the
other hand, the fact that Bela (and Marta) asked Kerri to "shake off" a
serious injury and give herself a severe sprain with torn ligaments "for
the team" casts a bit of a shadow on the sport of gymnastics. Ignoring
injuries was, of course, one of the major charges against Bela when all of
this criticism began. It's hard not to look on gymnastics as modern day
footbinding when the injuries are as bad as they are (Dominique Moceaneu,
four inch stress fracture in her leg, Shannon Miller, severe tendinitis,
etc.) and the pressure to perform is so much that they do it anyway.

Again, nothing to take away from the US, but it's too bad that Kerri
seriously injured herself unnecessarily "for the team." I find it
interesting that no one is telling us that we would have won anyway. Oops.

peace,

norm
