Kentucky Tournament
OCTOBER 5, 6, and 7, 1996
Invitations are in the mail for the Annual University of Kentucky
Collegiate Debate Tournament on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, Octover 5, 6,
and 7, 1996. The Tournament will have three divisions: THE HENRY CLAY
DEBATES (NDT VARSITY), THE JEFFERSON DAVIS DEBATES (NDT JUNIOR VARSITY),
plus "THE PRE-SEASON NOVICE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP."
SPECIAL AIR FARE ARRANGEMENTS: We have made special arrangements with
Delta Airlines as our official carrier for reduced airfares, including
reductions on Supersavers. Delta is Lexington's major carrier and with the
exception of US Air is the only airline with major jet service into
Lexington. To take advantage of Delta's special services for our
convention, call Delta in your city, your travel agent, or 1-800-241-6760,
between 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m., Eastern Time. REFER TO FILE NUIMBER
LO811.
THE FORMAT FOR THE HENRY CLAY DEBATES (NDT VARSITY) will consist of eight
preliminary rounds of switch-side, two-person teams debating the 1996-1997
topic.
THE FORMAT FOR THE JEFFERSON DAVIS DEBATES (NDT JUNIOR VARSITY) will
consist of at least six preliminary rounds and perhaps more, depending on
the number of entries.
THE FORMAT FOR THE PRE-SEASON NOVICE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP will be an
elimination bracket probably beginning at the quarter-final level. Novice
will be defined as students who are debating for the first time in college
this year. TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR THIS DIVISION, DEBATERS MUST HAVE FIRST
PARTICIPATED IN THE PRELIMINARY ROUNDS OF THE HENRY CLAY VARSITY DEBATES.
SWEET SIXTEEN: Should we have a significant increase, and only if, in the
number of teams this year, we will employ a new format to arrive at the
"Sweet Sixteen." Teams 9-24 will debate in a run-off on Monday morning to
determine the magic number of sixteen. Obviously, teams 1-8 will sit out
during this round. This format will still enable us to have all "out"
rounds at the Harley Hotel.
HOUSING: Each school must secure its own housing. Arrangements should be
made immediately. Most motel managers say they will be completely filled
by mid-September. We are competing with Thoroughbred racing at Keeneland
Race Course as well as University of Kentucky football. PLEASE, make your
reservations immediately. SINCE ALL SOCIAL EVENTS AND ELIMINATION ROUNDS
WILL BE HELD AT THE HARLEY HOTEL, WE URGE YOU TO STAY THERE IF AT ALL
POSSIBLE. Arrangements have been made with the Harley Hotel, 2143 North
Broadway, Lexington, for special rates. Enclosed is a reservation card.
We will also use the Harley as our headquarters hotel. Our block of rooms
will be held until September 23, 1995. Reservations received after that
time will be given special consideration on a first-come basis, but you
will not be guaranteed after that date. We suggest that any reservations
made after this date be called directly to the HARLEY SALES OFFICE, not
Harley Reservations.
Invitations were mailed first-class handling on this past Monday to all NDT
and CEDA institutions.
I sincerely hope you can join us for this series of debates the first
weekend in October. We are inviting all high-school students and coaches
on the cx mailing list to join us as guest observers.
PEACE, LOVE, AND UNDERSTANDING,
J.W. Patterson
