Re: Swearing
" First, debate is the art of communication, and swearing is a form of
communication.
Therefore, swearing should not be outlawed in a debate round. "
This seems to suggest that swearing is an "art" form. More importantly, I
think this is an example of what I suggested in an earlier post on the
subject. That is, just because it exists, we are somehow obligated to allow it
to happen.
"However, it should be punished when one goes to the extreme of using
vulgarities just forthe sake of getting away with it. "
I am sorry, but I am at a loss how one could use vulgarities in a constructive
way. Thus far, Korcok has not been able to give me a persuasive example of how
a good argument is made better by adding a little profanity to it. If you win
the debate because you intimidate me by calling me an f---ing idiot, then are
you really the better communicator? How did the use of the profanity make the
argument more persuasive?
By the way...I am one of Korcok's debaters, and I am sure I know how and when
to swear quite well ....despite what my fearless leader may think.
I am curious what you mean by knowing "how and when to swear quite well?" I
have absolutely no doubt that Korcok can teach you a great deal about debate.
I wonder if what he can teach you about debate is somehow made stronger,
clearer or more effective through his use of profanity?
Just wondering and observing
