David, you miss the big picture. Your language choice is acceptable in the
appropriate setting. It is not appropriate in a public setting (by
community standards) where there are people who find your postings
offensive. The use is not whether the language is harmful or degrading but
whether it is unacceptable and repugnant in this forum. The fact that
numerous people have indicated that they find it repugnant, indicates this.

i think that the picture is much more out of focus than this. we view the
forum differently, i suppose, and define community standards differently.
why should that a few persons might find certain words or phrases
"offensive" dictate the language use of the entire community? the
"community standard" doctrine is pathetic as a measure of speech censorship,
whether by a court or a listserve.

Secondly, your failure to address my direct question as to where a line is
drawn is evasive and self-serving. In essence when you hide behind
"personal choice, and defending some language choices does not place a
burden of defending all language choices," is a product of "me only
thinking." In other words, what I want to do is acceptable--a hidden
agenda. I think the reason that neither you nor Yuri in his backchannel
response to me chose to answer the question speaks volumes about this issue.

i confess that my defense of language choice, including "dirty words,"
reflects my personal opinions and biases. the issue still remains whether
certain language use is "acceptable," and the threshold and slippery slope
problems remain.
