Susan Stanfield and I have written the following amendment to the Constitution
and we need to petition to have it put to a vote of the membership in the next
mailing. I ask that if you are a _voting member_ that you print this off, sign
it and fax it to Greg Simerly at (618) 453-2812. We need at least 15 voting
members to fax their signature to Greg to get it into the newsletter.
Amendment to Article IV of the CEDA Constitution:
Section 11: Student Representatives
A. Each region will select a student representative who will serve as a
member of the Student Representatives Committee. Student Representatives must
be officially enrolled, undergraduate students in good standing at the college
or university they attend.
B. The duties of the Student Representatives are to:
1. report the concerns of student debaters to the Executive Council.
2. oversee the selection process of their committee members.
3. select on representative from their committee to serve on the
Topic Selection Committee.
C. Each student representative will have one vote at the annual business
meetings of the Association. Student Representatives may vote by proxy
under the conditions specified in Article VII.
Rationale: The major purpose of our organization is to teach and serve our
students. Therefore, it is very important to ensure that students have a voice
in the governance of the organization. We have already formed a student commit
tee and adopted an amendment appointing a student representative to the topic
committee. This amendment further formalizes this process and gives students
more voice by conferring voting member status upon the student representatives.
It is important that each regional student representative has a vote that will
register the concerns of the students in each region. Student representative
voting power will give more organziational impact to student concerns.
It is our howp that this will also provide an incentive for student groups
in each region to be more active.
I, ______________________________, voting member of CEDA from _________________
college or university petition CEDA to place this amendment on the ballot for
the CEDA membership to vote upon. Date: ______________________-
Please fax your signature to Greg Simerly, CEDA Executive Secretary (618)453-
2812
