Re: 5th year -Reply
I support a five year eligibility rule. Many schools are now moving
toward an increased number of "five-year" programs. For instance, at
SMS teaching degrees are five-year programs. I find it laughable that
I must tell fifth year students who are trying to become high school
debate coaches that in their fifth year they can no longer
participate on the team. I also find it odd that we would want to
stop participation in an activity which I believe is firmly grounded
in education at a time when most students are finally entering the
courses which will make the biggest difference in their lives.
Finally, I would agree that some debaters stick around too long. So
do some other students. And, a STRICT five year rule would be more
rigid than the current 8 semester rule.

In team topic debate in America today we have too many people not
graduating, not in four, but many in five, six, or ever. I see them
every weekend. It sucks. It belies the notion that debate is
educational and prepares students for success.
Debate is a preparation for life, it is not life. Four years of
debate is enough, no matter how long it takes people to graduate. I
fear that five years of debate will mean people will graduate in 6 or
7, not in 5.
If students want more debate, I suggest students graduate and become
coaches and judges.
