AFA membership
You are invited to join the American Forensic Association. Founded in 1949
by a group of college debate coaches, the AFA is now the largest
professional organization in the United States devoted to forensic
education, and international membership continues to grow.
Most of the 1,000 members of the American Forensic Association are college
and university professors who teach argumentation, debate, forensics, and
related courses in communication studies. Significant membership subgroups
include high school teachers, attorneys, and the clergy, as well as
university faculty members in philosophy, English, political science,
history, and economics. Graduate students and undergraduates are most welcome.
Argumentation and Advocacy, now in its 31st volume, is the Journal of the
American Forensic Association. The journal includes articles in all aspects
of argumentation studies: it is held by more than 500 libraries in the
United States and throughout the world. An annual convention is sponsored
in autumn in conjuction with SCA. Through its chartered committees, the AFA
sponsors the National Debate Tournament and the National Individual Events
Tournament. An annual Calendar of Forensic Tournaments, published in the
June AFA Newsletter, helps college coaches plan their season: a Directory,
published each September, lists all individual members. Beginning this
year, the AFA will publish Championship Debates and Speeches, a collection
of transcripts of final rounds at national tournaments sponsored by AFA and
other forensic organizations. Membership includes receiving most of the
above publications.
New members are welcome at any time, of course. Special membership
categories are designed to encourage graduate, undergraduate, and high
school student to join at reduced rates: a Life Membership option is
available, as is a non-journal option. Memberships received by September
15th each year will be included in the Directory (and those received by
January 15th will be printed in the Directory Addendum). Since al
memberships are for a common term of July through June, those joining after
July 1st will receive all publications previously sent to current members.
You may join by toll-free phone or fax if you are using Visa or Mastercard.
We believe that you will find a membership in the American Forensic
Association to be professionally valuable, and we hope that we may welcome
you as a new member. To join return the following form to:
