Internet Resources and Citations

I figure that it might be a nice idea to come up with some system to
cite this internet material on here and be more or less uniform about it
since, well, most people researching on the internet probably got their
sources from the list that was posted by (I believe) Pat.

Thus I present: Joe's Modest Proposal

I. Articles on internet, but not in print: Include the authors name, date,
nameof place you got it (NATO Enviro. Database - Top Secret Reports),

and the internet address. That way people can go verify it, the way
we do with text citations now.

II. On Internet and In print: Full source cite like a text citation + internet
    cite per I.

III. I really don't want to touch this one, I don't think it'll crop up
often, but if it does get cited I'd put an internet cite per I.

IV. I wont do it if you don't. Seriously though, I have some reservations
about quoting people who are "talking". For example, the CEDA L isn't
really a place to get your theory evidence, I don't think this counts
as published writing. I also don't think what scientists chat about
on listservs necessarily constitutes accurate scientific predictions
based on experiments or evidence. I'm not entirely convinced that, just
because they're "experts" in their field, their non-published opinions
or statements should be used as "evidence" to support an argument. I'm

sure there are arguments both ways and I'd like to hear them before I
start sending Doyne Farmer e-mail about whether or not his artificial
life research will annihilate the universe before a deep sea bed
mining program could be put in place.
