Christians and Easter
a couple of observations about this discussion:
1) Christians are not the majority except in the United States. As far as I
know Islam is the worlds largest religon. I only mention this because
the discussion was prefaced with a concern about diversity and about
recognition of diversity.
2) Debate nationals are constantly plagued by a number of problems including
finding a weekend that accomodates study for all of its students and
finding a campus willing to go through the transformational excercise in
chaos that is known as CEDA nationals. While I agree that Easter is a
valuable concern so is having a national tournament that accomadates the
academic aspirations of all member schools combined with finding a campus
with the space available (and not much happens on campuses on Easter
weekend).
3) We should make efforts to accommodate all forms of worship on any holiday
of any religon at any tournament that conflicts with a religous holiday.
If the intent of the message was to inspire awareness of our religous
insensitivity it hits the mark. Many tournaments (not just nationals)
conflict with religous holidays and we should be more aware. As far as I
know, time has been allocated for religous observance at all nationals
that have been held on Easter. It is unfortunate that more cannot be done
but perhaps we can investigate new ways of providing room during tournament
schedules for wellness in general and religon in specific. Josh
