early release/small schools/whining
I'm calling bullshit on the "small school" whining about an August topic
release. Here are my answers:
1. No Link-assumes schools leave because of research burdens. No. Schools
leave for ONE big reason-the almighty buck. they don't have the cabbage
for travel. This is said, but not a rejection of early release.
2. Link Empirically denied- We have been in the "arms race" in terms of
research escalation, but there have been very few, if any, schools, who
have left because of research.
3. Preempt-NEDA means nothing- NEDA had nothing to do with research
requirements, NEDA was a traditionalist backlash to rapid delivery and
large impacts. I feel I am very qualified to make this characterization,
as many of the NEDA schools left OUR region.
4. Source Indict-Mosty of the schools doing the whining aren't what most
would consider small schools, and Cornell is small by NO criteria. Guess
what? Ya gots no quals. Additionally, it could be argued that many
ofthese schools have a vested interest in maintaining the SQ, AKA
propping up the man.
5. Non-Unique-Many other factors already are at work to increase the
research burden, i.e. the tendency to run smaller cases, increased access
to alternative information sources, etc.
6. Non-Unique-I cut a shitload of ev. in August. I cut a shitload in
June and July too. At least with the topic release in August, I can be
more confident that my August research will be useful. BTW-I have a
family and a full-time job, all year round, so I don't think that I have
it easier than most.
7. Turn- This gives smaller schools an extra MONTH before the first
tourney, this means we might even have background research done and at
least have a clue about the material in time for USC.
8. Impact T/O- Schools won't leave CEDA. If anything, the debaters will
become more efficient with what spare time they DO have
There may be more to come-
By the way, has ANY school that could be considered small objected to
August release? Just curious.
