Proxies: Korcok's own complaint on this issue concludes by admitting that
proxies are appropriate for people who cannot be at the meeting. He says
the proxies should be given only if the person giving their proxy
understands what they're getting into and supports the reasons for it. Of
course. If there's blame to be had, it's for people who irresponsibly
give their proxies. Proxies, given by people of sound mind and body, are
legitimate as per the CEDA Constitution. Tuna has not solicited Wake's
proxy, but we have thought through these issues for years, and have
experience using a topic selection process much like the one he proposes,
so would likely be willing to give our proxy to Tuna or like minded
individuals.
Conflict of interest: There is no clear conflict of interest. First,
something that makes things easier for workshops doesn't necessarily help
any one workshop. In fact, larger workshops seem to benefit most from
later release, since the larger the workshop, the more issues it can
cover. If there are four potential topics, a large workshop could better
cover them. Second, it's not clear that workshops ingeneral would grow.
In NDT, with a July 15 release, there are relatively fewer workshops.
Perhaps with an early release, students don't feel like they need a
workshop, their coaches may rather just work with their own students, and
people aren't as willing to share their best evidence and ideas before
the season starts. All of this is speculative, of course, but that goes
to show that there is not a clear cut conflict of interest. Tuna argued
that the early release would make the teaching that does go on at
workshops better for the students who attend them. That does not
necessarily translate into financial gain for Tuna's workshop, either
relative to other workshops or relative to non-workshop alternatives.
Tuna never argued that the proposal would increase workshop attendance.
Finally, Tuna's workshop is a NON-PROFIT enterprise. Enough said.
