First is the issue of doubtful or fictional DA's
(such as a China nuke war DA) The reason white magic is
obviously fictional and a DA with huge impacts is not
comes from this:
1. China exists (if you don't believe it fly there)
2. China has certain capabilities i.e. nukes
3. China has national interests
.
. . A DA assumes that the plan will violate 3 causing China to use
2.
This DA has certain subjective parts. First the link which
assumes that, for example, the US raising kelp will violate
China's national interests, and second, the brink that this
vilation will cause China to use its nukes.
Therefor, while the DA may be untrue at some level, it is based
in objective reality (parts 1,2,3) the only question is
the exact characteristics of the reality (what are China's
national interests) and the extent to which that reality
can be vilated (brinks). This allows the aff. to present cards
which define the national inetrests of China and the actions
that China will take in response to violations. The neg
team can present counterevidence that disproves the links
or brinks of the aff.
on the other hand, examine the magic case.:
1. It assumes that white magicians can actually cast spells
2. That there is magic floating over the ocean
3. that magic can be used for good purposes
It requires subjective assumptions on all levels that
are either unprovable except through assertion, or dependent
on the faith of the judge.
Therefore the fiction of the white magic case is "obvious" while the
fiction of the DA is debatable.
