Re: persuasion and argument

>>>>>>>>>>
Now, within Parli, there is a portion of evaluation called "audience
analysis." And, I think this sums up what people should be doing in
debate. If the judge is not a speed flow judge, don't go fast. Period.
If the judge is a speed/flow judge, go fast.

Interesting that you should bring this up. A month or so ago I was on a
panel in the final round of Parli with one other fast judge (yes, I consider
myself fairly fast) and a moderate one. Prop was a typical Parli team with
much persuasion and pathos. Opp then got up and proceeded to go pretty fast.
Prop immediately went ballistic and made a heated point of order, "this
isn't CEDA" they whined, "this is Parli". The LO stopped, looked at the
Speakers of the House, asked if we could understand her alright, and getting
a poitive response, continued at the same rate of speed.

Needless to say, prop's coach was furious. He was going on about how judges
such as us shouldn't be allowed to judge Parli. The thought then occurred to
me that this was the same guy who used to judge CEDA rounds and tell the
debaters that if they exceeded conversational speed that he would drop them
COLD. He insisted on the teams "adapt" to him. It made me smile to see, now,
how the shoe was on the other foot and how his teams just didn't adapt to
their audience. He should have remembered that adaptation can be (and
probably WILL be) a two way street.

It WAS a sweet event........
