Tournaments-IE and Public Debate
The Queens College Forensics Society cordially invites you to the first leg
of the New York City swing, the first annual "Fight the Power" Individual
Events Tournament to be held on Thursday, December 28th and Friday, December
29th, 1995. We hope many of you decide to spend New Year's enjoying the
sights of the Big Apple and an opportunity to pick up legs at three different
tournaments (Queens College, Brooklyn College, and New York University) in
less than 18 days!! Our tournament recognizes the role that students play
in furthering the freedom of expression and resisting negative trends in
society.
In 1964, hundreds of students participated in Freedom Summer and traveled to
the South to register voters in accordance with the Civil Rights and Voter
Rights Acts of 1964. On June 21, 1964 three of those young men, James
Chaney, Michael Schwerner and Andrew Goodman (a Queens College student) were
murdered in Philadelphia, Mississippi by the Neshoba County Sheriff and
members of the Ku Klux Klan. Their commitment to civil rights and freedom
of expression defined a time in the history of our nation. The rights and
equality they gave their lives fighting for area as much in jeopardy in
certain parts of the world today as they were thirty years ago. Our
tournament honors the spirit of their efforts.
We will be offering a full compliment of AFA Individual Events plus
improvisational pairs and also public forum debate sponsored by the IMPACT
Coalition. We look forward to seeing you in December.
Sincerely,
Will Baker Alyssa Preston Kim Petersen
