**RE: Defending Korcok (Response to Pat)
Read the post again, Pat. I said some judges were lazy. I said other
judges may be handicapped by their super-ability and egotism. You
decide which category applies to Mr. Korcok.
I'm all for innovations in CEDA. I congratulate the community for
having the collective courage to start the move to year-long policy
topics. I think next we need to be looking at 9-3-6 and ten minutes
of prep time.
I'm not really complaining about Korcok's decisions. He's a smart guy
and I've never had a personal reason to complain about one of his
decisions.
I've even attempted Korcok's non-flowing experiment when judging
western JV and novice CEDA debates, myself. Tried it twice at Western
States, last year. Both times debaters were on the verge of tears
because they thought I was either unconcerned with the debate or that
they had done something to offend me.
Still, Pat, I think you are missing the true context of this thread.
Tuna asked Korcok how he could advocate that "speed is what makes
you smart" when he chooses to no-flow some rounds. What's the purpose
of the grand experiment, if Korcok chooses to simultaneously embrace
speed as a pathway for cerebral expansion? It's not like K's no-
flowing is hastening in some new day of CEDA communication, right?
I'm sure you would feel very happy if I just walked into a room,
kicked my feet up, folded my arms, and watched your team debate. I
have a sneaking suspicion that in that scenario you would be far less
charitable in discerning my causes and purposes. Then, on the other
hand, if they're running pomo kritiks which urge me to ignore all the
arguments and vote on how I "feel," it might be their best hope.
I am glad you don't personally embrace the no-flow option.
Recognizing that you don't, leaves me with the feeling that your post
is really nothing more than a defense of Korcok's judging integrity.
Concede, I agree. There are too many other aspects of Korcok's
"worldview" that make easy targets for me to waste my time on.
At least, Pat, you chose not to phrase this as an ethics question.
Tuna, are you peeking?
