student judges -Reply

I was one of those unlucky enough to have to judge. I didn't really enjoy
it, since I essentially had a 1/3 say in whether teams could advance or
not, and I knew both teams. Furthermore, I would agree that to have a
single student judge on the panel isn't good because they have too much
pressure, responsibility, peer pressure, etc. that hurts their ability to
make a decision they feel comfortable making. However, I think I like the
idea of having a panel of 5 or 7 debaters as the 3rd or 5th judge in the
round. None of them actually have that much power, and it allows them
to become more educated about debate, and specifically how hard it can
be to judge a round.

Besides, if the alternative to having student judges is to pull random
people off the street to judge the round, I think I would have rather had a
debater in the back of the room when I was debating. Finally, please
give some reasons why you think it sucks, instead of just saying so!

Long Beach was forced to have students on elim panels a few years
ago. It stunk! Those who weren't good/lucky enough to break to
double-octs were given the chance to judge those who were. Doesn't
make sense. Let the controversy begin...
