Topic Selection Process

The topic selection process works as follows. Each year a committee is
formed consisting of the Pres., 1st & 2nd VPs, Exec. Secy and several elected
members of CEDA. Prior to changes last year, the committee met once during
the summer and again during the fall to make a list of topics. Ideas are
solicited from students, coaches at nationals and anyone is free to send
suggestions to the committee. Last year a new process began which directed
the committee to first send out a list of topics which the membership would
vote upon to select one topic area and five topics would be developed on
the one topic area. So for the spring there was two tiers of voting. The
initial voting determined the topic area which was post-cold war U.S. policy
and the second tier of voting is going on now and will select the topic.
So that's how it works. The current system is somewaht similar to the
selection process for the h.s. topic process. In the mid-80's students used
to attend business meetings, especially at nationals and often spoke out on
controversial issues. I would like to see that happen again. Perhaps there
should be a student on the CEDA executive council. Would any students be in-
terested, do you think?
