MIDWEST DEBATE INSTITUTE

July 31-August 9, 1997
$650 flat fee includes instructional fees, housing, weekday meals, copy of
evidence, Lexis/Nexis access, and more
INSTITUTE PHILOSOPHY
MDI uses intensive instruction in small coaching groups to teach:
-Critical thinking skills
-Productive research
-Effective argument writing
-Refutation skills
-Rebuttal skills
-Audience analysis
Students leave the institute with:
-In-depth knowledge of the topic area
-Cases and positions that THEY have prepared
-Round ready models of affirmative cases and negative positions
-Ability to teach other squad members

MEALS
-Weekday meals included in institute fee
-On weekends, there is freedom to choose from a variety of on and off campus

RECREATION ACTIVITIES
-Access to SIU's nationally recognized Recreation Center, with Olympic-sized
pool, racquetball, basketball, weight room, and indoor track
-Swimming
-Boating and fishing on Campus Lake
-Quiet walks through Thompson Woods on campus
-Two mile jogging path around Campus Lake
TRANSPORTATION
-We provide free transportation from and to Lambert Field Airport, St.
Louis, MO; from Southern Illinois Airport, Carbondale, IL; and from
Williamson County Airport, Marion, IL
-If flying, please plan to arrive the morning of Thursday, July 31, and to
depart the afternoon of Sunday, August 9, 1997.

guarantee enrollment
-Check-in for the institute is 1:00-3:00 p.m., July 31, 1997 at University
Hall, 1101 S. Wall Street, Carbondale, IL.
