MPJ data and some conclusions
In an attempt to rise above the anecdotal, and because Steve Hunt has posed
some of these concerns, here are some findings.
This data seems to support the following statements:
1. MPJ does not cause the most preferred judges to judge the "good" rounds
and the least preferred to judge the "bad" rounds.
The overall records of the teams judged by the most preferred judges was
233-215, while the record of the least preferred judges was 190-207. When
looking at MPJ rounds only, it was: most preferred 136-116, least preferred
100-124. Remember, this compares the MOST preferred 5 with the LEAST
preferred 5. Not that much different from the random rounds, where the most
preferred judges judged teams with records of 97-99 and least preferred at
90-92.
2. MPJ means that people get the judges they want -- everyone does, not
just teams at the top.
94.6% in MPJ rounds got a mutual A or B, only 57% in random rounds. In MPJ
rounds, 1/3 of the non-mutuals were due to last minute substitutions.
3. No one is excluded from judging.
Looking at the least preferred judges, you can see that 2 of the 5 were
still A's to over 50% of the teams, and only one judge was in danger of not
judging much (with over 8% A) but still judged a full commitment, which for
that judge was 4 rounds.
4. Because CEDA Nationals is a much larger tournament, I expect for the
results from it to be even better in terms of the above findings.
This data comes from the University of South Carolina debate tournament,
September, 1995, where I supervised tabulation operations. I hope the
spacing makes sense so that you can follow the columns.
Explaining the data tags:
TotalAS = In all 7 rounds, records of teams when judged
MPTotalAS = In MP rounds (4-7), records of teams when judged
TotalTotal = In all 7 rounds, final records of teams judged
MPTotal = In MP rounds (4-7), final records of teams judged
RTotal = In random rounds (1-3), final records of teams judged
