Forrest Gump: Sometimes it happens..
T-Shirt man: What? Shit?

I mean that SHIT will HAPPEN. In debate, in real life, in your family,
in your tenure track... Shit will happen. It's a good thing to learn that
sometimes, even when yo've tried your damndest, it doesn't get you what
you want. Is it just? No. Is it fair? No. But who said life was
fair?
>Is this the answer to my question? NO.
I didn't know you had a question. It thought you were venting.
You
> are describing the SQ, and it sucks.
Uh huh.. tell me something I didn't already know. =)
If we said "Women lose more in
> the trips' than men," we'd probably have a HUGE movement to rectify
> the problem.
Do you really think so? There was only one woman in Semi's (from my
recollection..) I haven't heard an overwhelming cry from the CEDA
community to try and "rectify" (whatever you mean by that) the
situation. An all woman team hasen't been at in Monday outrounds for my
two years at Nats... has the community tried to "backlash" against this?
I don't think so. Just because something is observationally significant
doesn't mean that it's something that's inherently wrong with the system.
Look, I didn't see the outround in question. I know it sucks to lose to
a team that you *know* you didn't lose to. But what is the purpose of
beating yourself up and having this big hullabaloo on the L? Do you
really think that the CEDA Community is going to have a large referendum
specifying specific judges that should/should notbe allowed to judge? If
you had teams that wrote to the Exec council to "justify" their
coach/judges, do you really think that would be an accurate perception of
the person? What if the team was made up of a bunch of first year
debaters that had very little knowledge about the activity? What about
debaters that take their coaches for granted? Where do you draw the
line?
You can't according to the idea that you propose.
> Why is it that we watch OUR BEST EAT IT IN TRIPS' AND
> DOUBLES AND DO NOTHING?
What do you propose we do? Sometimes the best really *do* bite the dust
in trips and doubles. No one is perfect.
THESE ARE THE TEAMS THAT WORK THE HARDEST
> AND PUT THE MOST TIME BACK INTO THE ACTIVITY, WHY DO WE LEAVE THEM
> TO THE MERCY OF THOSE JUDGES THAT EVEN THEIR OWN SQUADS CONFESS IN
> PUBLIC ARE INCOMPETANT.
Adapt, Adapt, Adapt.... and when you can't adapt any more, give it up to
fate. if there's one thing I've learned from this activity is that
there will be sometimes when you just *can't* persuade someone to listen
to your argument for x, y, or z reason. If the problem is that a
debater is speedin' faster than the critic can evaluate, or takes the
debate over the critics head to a higher level of analysis or theory than
he/she can handle, then it is the debater's fault. If the problem is
that teh critic just won't listen to you, or flow you, then you have
every right in the world to be pissed; rant and rave freely. But realize
that the problem lies with an individual.... not the community at large.
> THE SOLUTION IS NOT TO SIT BACK AND TAKE A FUCKING, AND HOPE THAT
> SOME DAY DEBATERS CAN PLUCK THE RANDOM BRAINWAVES OF A PARTICULAR
> JUDGE OUT TO "ADAPT."
Go ahead Yuri, tell us how your *really* feel =)
Lemme put this in terms of the real world... you go out for a job.
You're more qualified than the otehr applicants. The person who gets the
job is friends with the people in the personel department. Did you get
fucked? Inadvertently. What did you learn? : It's not always how well
you do, but who you know.
I'm not advocating schmoozing with critics to get a ballot. I'm just
bringing to light that there will always be times where the worthy one,
based on merit, will be overlooked. It's a part of life. It's human
nature. To fix it, I think you'd have to go and do some heavy duty
genetic recombinations.
