winning
initially, those who coach in Carbondale are also Egyptian hunting dogs,
they don't just handle them.
i hope the following is accepted with the respect intended and due both
Sean and Jason. the latter having dramatically introduced me to The
Beauty Myth years ago, with the skillful beauty of a young champion in
training, well before most folks had crystallized the important concept.
and the former who endearingly sports Tao of Pooh t-shirts, while helping
to create champions as well.
why must we use such violent metaphors to describe our art?
in one brief message I learned the following descriptions of what we used
to call "winning:"
first, not winning is called "pretty lame."
then: "face crushing,"
"beat the crap out of," and
"good old fashioned...ass-whippings."
don't get me wrong, i'm sure i said these things too. and there's nothing
i love more than cleanly RIPPING the ball from an opponent attempting a
lay-up in MY lane during monday morning pick-up hoop games. but reading
all that stuff in one letter...
on the ball court, when someone falls down at the end of the play we stop
and pick them up.
i thought winning was "being better," not making someone else bad.
