Lexis & Lemoine

First, the suggested prohibition takes a much bigger toll on small
schools, without adequate libraries. I guess if you're from Mich St
or SIU access to a library is no problem. Weber's library is simply
not sufficient for a research foundation. Forgive us, if we choose to
not give up.

Secondly, not all of us have the maximization of socialization time
as our primary objective. My debaters have part-time jobs, families,
and schools. Yeah, I know, whine, whine. The point is that for my
squad we get almost half of our work accomplished AT TOURNAMENTS! We
show up a day early, many times, just to maximize our ability to get
squad assignments done in an atmosphere conducive to work.

Thirdly, work need not always trade off with socialization. I am
amazed at how my debaters have always found the time for both work
and socialization. Frankly, I think choices regarding socialization
are personal choices to made by each squad. I am extremely
uncomfortable with anyone else, even someone as respected as Sean,
attempting to legislate socialization. While we all need
socialization time, we also know that somethings go on in that time
that the activity would be better off without, like tranfer
recruiting.

Finally, Sean's suggestion is absolutely unenforceable. Would the
tournament send watchers to each hotel room? Does a prohibition on
Lexis/Nexis extend to all the other electonic databases? Would it
include a prohibition on checking e-mail during the tournament? Would
the processing of previous pull-downs be allowed? Just like the way
we have attempted to prohibit transfer recruitment, Sean's suggestion
would be violated on the sly with the necessary wink from the
community.

We don't need more ridiculous attempts to restrict the personal
choices of debaters. If a coach thinks that tournament Lexis is bad
for their squad let them take a personal stance. Weber has worked
hard to establish the resource base necessary for Lexis. We will use
it as we see fit.

No one should interpret any aspect of this note as a personal slam on
Sean Lemoine. He really is one of the best coaches/judges in either
side of this activity.
