I do not know what Dr. Stepp told the students during the meeting but the
general business meeting certainly was not held during rounds. It was
held from 9:00AM to 11:00AM at the hotel before rounds began. In fact,
a student rep, Elliot Roberts from Alabama, reported to the general
business meeting the outcome of the student meeting. I know of no
coach who would have refused to listen to the voice of a student,
regardless of what Dr. Stepp may have reported. If there is an
"impenetrable barrier between students and coaches" perhaps it is due
to misinformation and poor reporting of what actually occured at the
meetings. For Jessica to think that student desires were given no voice
at the so-called "coaches meeting" is evidence that she was not there.
The debate over the issues voted on at the meeting was as vigorous and
contentious as any in recent memory. The core of most arguments
focused on the needs of students and which outcomes better served
them.
The issues facing this organization are many and varied. Evolution is
often more painful than revolution becuase it proceeds at a slower pace
yet change is inevitable. As we continue these discussions about the
New World Order in debate the best starting point is an accurate
reporting of what occurs in our public discussions.
