WWW Site Announcement
SOME BACKGROUND
Al Snyder from Vermont and Doyle Srader from Georgia have each
set up their own gophers for debate, and they are incredible. It was
these that gave us the idea to start the homepage. We felt that while a
gopher serves it's purpose well, a WWW site may be able to do more.
Unfortunately a gopher cannot offer links to other sites, nor can it
offer inlined graphics. It also seems that the gopher servers are on
their way out while WWW is on it's way in. Now, don't get me wrong, we
are not trying to bash Mr. Snyder's nor Mr. Srader's services, and as you
will see we actually support their gophers.
HOMEPAGE FEATURES
Right now we offer some pretty cool stuff. There are links to
Mr. Snyder's Debate Central and Mr. Srader's Gopher Server. There is
information on debate listservers, summer camps, etc. There will be a whole
tournament section which will allow tournament directors to send us info,
which we will post, as well as adding our own info, such as a link to a
weather info service for that city! The main focus of the page, however
will be a nice little section called the Debate Research Haven. We have
seen great posts of info from people in the past with WWW sites, gophers,
FTP sites, newsgroups, chat lines, and listservers for research, but now
we will provide actual real-time links to those services! Going even
beyond that, we will provide sources of non-electronic services. There
will be a section of general sources, and a section of topic focused sources.
This is why we say the result of combining technology and debate nets us
a pretty cool result!
WOW, SCOTT: HOW CAN I GET THIS WEALTH OF INFORMATION?
Well, we aren't offering it yet. We have a few bugs to work out,
and quite a bit of construction yet to be done. As of now the release
date is Monday, May 1st. Depending on how studying for finals goes, we
may have to push it back a bit. Keep an eye out here for more
information and the official release announcement!
Until then
We remain,
