Re: Latin America

Thanks for all of your responses! Sorry it took me so long to answer you
guys but things are nutty here. Anyway, many of you seem to think that
there is a large chance that we will have a nuclear war. Please let me
clarify myself. When I said that we have been debating about nuclear
wars forever and have never had one I meant that I don't believe that one
of the scenarios that we have discussed has never happened. And I truly
do not believe that there is a very realistic scenario for nuclear war over
something in Latin America. Please correct me if I am wrong. I agree
with the person who responded to Trond saying that we may have tested
nuclear weapons, and threatened to use nuclear weapons but aside from
WWII we have not used nuclear weapons and I do not believe that we will.
Whatever you think about nuclear war or whatever topic we get I
still think that there are other important impacts to discuss. I agree
with Trond in that the risk of other impacts is higher and felt by more
average Americans. Hey gives the examples of patriarch, racism,
ignorance, poverty, malnutrition, etc... All of these are felt each and
every day whereas nuclear war may happen in the future if a whole lot of
internal links come together at exactly the right time under the right
circumstances. Many of you claim that nuclear wawr impacts are the way
to go and that they are really easy to weigh. Just because you may have
to work harder to weigh these other issues does not mean that we should
toss them aside. It just means that we may have to think a little harder
and analyze a little more. These kinds of impacts are also a way to
incorporate values into policy debate. I think that this could be a good
compromise between the two.
As for the Latin America topic specifically, I can only say that
most schools do have an education department whereas many schools do not
have a foreign policy or Latin America department. When a school has a
particular department it usually gets the magazines and periodicals to go
along with it. I am not saying that the internet is a bad source of
information but just that it would be very difficult to get all of your
information from the internet. I am also not saying that because we have
a bad library everyone should cater to us but that I am sure that other
schools have the same problem that we do so why not pick a topic that
everyone would have easy access to?
I must go our lab is closing! I will finish my response at a
later date! Until then, have fun everyone! Good luck in preparing for
finals! God Bless!
