2. Speaking out against widespread practices which violate the principle
that "the primary creation of argument and the primary research effort in
CEDA debate must be the student's."
There are people speaking out: some with their voices, some by the
practices of their programs, and some with their feet. Some are doing
parliamentary debate, some are doing NEDA debate, some aren't doing debate
any more, some debate regionally and avoid the national tournament/circuit,
and some are seeking to reform CEDA debate. Many of them are not and won't
be on this L. Listen to them . . .
There are also people who are not speaking out, yet. It's very
difficult to speak in favor of principles that run counter to competitive
self-interest. My bottom line is that debate is a fundamentally enriching
educational activity, that there are many wonderful human beings competing
and coaching in it, but there are some elements of the activity that are
running at the level of a giant charade which must be unmasked. The
evidence question will be one test of Ken Broda-Bahm's question (The
Forensic, Spring 1994) regarding the ability of the CEDA community to
challenge and regulate itself.
