re:topics
The Latin America Topic is also pretty broad, and the rec topic
could turn into just about anything as well. I like to have broad
topics. I understand that not everyone has massive resources to go and
research all of the bizarre and outlandish plans and off-cases that all
of us around the cournty are prepared to research on LA or rec, but no
matter what the topic is, I can make it broad and so can a lot of people
out there. So, now that a few of the possible ideas that are tentatively
being thought about by a few people (mostly on this list) the topic has
been supposedly narrowed. However, just to show that anything can be
made broad, I'll tell you some of the (demented) thoughts that I had on
each of these things.
BTW, I am REALLY tired right now, so please forgive me if I digress.

OK, I'm taxing marijuana... which means I have to legalize it in
effect. Now I'm putting out all of my health stuff about chemotherapy's
effects and my reduced number of people in prison impacts (with the
decreased AIDS and TB scenarios). I'm also getting by-product benefits
like better rope and cloth, with the attendant land abuse and erosion
stuff. And I'll also use it for biomass and stop global warming. Wow,
look at all the (Xtra-T) benefits. I think my case is topical.

Alright, I'm reducing Fed Power... but I'm doing it by shutting
off the electricity to their building (ergo, they get reduced power).
Hey, I don't care if they get to monkey around with interest rates and
money supply, I'm not wasting power from coal-fired plants, which means
I'm stopping Global Warming. And what's even better than that, the US
government doesn't have to buy as many light bulbs. Think of the
savings. If it's fifty cents a bulb, and they use 1 bulb per month and
they have 100000 light sockets, I'm saving 600000 dollars a year!
> Resolved: that Alan Greenspan should remain head of the FRB.
OK, I'm re-appointing him. And, since as we all saw on the
National Enquirer, Greenspan is an alien, we'll be able to colonize Mars
faster. We'll all go live in little ocean domes built by Mr. Savage and
have dolphins deliver our mail until we blast off into outer space just
as the world begins to rot from all the abuse we've been giving it. What
do you mean the Natioanl Enquirer has no credibility?

ACCCCCCKKKKKKHHHHHH, THBTBT. We're pulling backfiles on this
one. We've got NAFTA stuff, we've got GATT stuff, we've got a link into
the EC scenarion, We're joining trade blox like there is no tomorrow.
And when we drop our tarriffs and let the world in, we're starting WOMP.
And we're stopping ALL nuke war. We're stopping ALL tension. We're
stopping ALL environment problems. We're saving the whole #$%& world!!!!

NEWT NEWT NEWT. NEWT will be elevated to the status of a god.
We will force all Americans to worship His Roundness. We're slicing
welfare moms and Midwest farmers from the welfare rolls. We're
withdrawing all support from the UN. We'tre going isolationist. We're
abolishing all military spending... but we're keeping the BOMBS! We're
getting rid of the REA, the SBA, the TVA, the FCC, the USMC, the FAA, the
NRLB, the IRS, and anything else with more than 2 consonants in its
acronym. I'm saving the whole planet here from.... I don't know,
whatever I find on LEXIS that we can save it from!
> Resolved: that the U.S. government should eliminate off-budget
> calculations in determining the federal budget deficit.

That's right. I'm going to abolish the calculations. We're
going to spend and dspend, BUT WE'RE NOT GOING TO ADD IT ALL UP! We'll
pring more money, spend it, print some more, and spend it too! Look, the
mAmerican people get the perception that we are stopping the runaway
budget deficit BUT we're actually just not telling them. So what if the
economy collapses? So what if we go to nuke war? We all feel good and
I've got the Hedonism ev saying that feeling good outweighs all else!
> (as you can tell, CEDA-L has become my life - sad isn't it?)
ME TOO.
THe whole point of this little tirade (aside from an attempt to be
humorous) is to say that whatever topic is chosen, regardless of how
small its scope is intended to be, the teams with enough resources and
imagination are going to be able to come up with wild, weird, and
convoluted things that will not be in a smaller school's library. I
personally would rather have LA or rec so that at least I would have an
idea of what strange stuff people would be pulling out.
Then I would have a gues as to what I would be facing, rather than having
to pul it out of no where in a round, and then frantically searching from
M to H getting ready fro the next tournament. HERE'S HOPING WE GET
SOMEHTING BIG AND BROAD!
Having way to much time to think about these things,
