How the topic committee works

Next I would like to explain how I ran the topic meeting at nationals a few
weeks ago. I had a written agenda that was distributed to all committee
members and to the guests who were observing. On the agenda were all ideas
submitted to me via Email. Tom Jewell's suggestion for the NDT topic to be
part of our ballot was on the agenda. The problem is that all that was
included in Tom's message to me was that the NDT topic be on the agenda.
We do not know what the NDT topic is. Our purpose at the meeting was to
choose subject areas. We cannot choose a nonexistent subject area. In
addition to suggestions made to me every participant at nationals had an
opportunity to submit topic suggestions on the tournament evautation form.
All of the ideas were written down and copies were made for committee
members and guests. I asked the topic committee to read all of the ideas
coming from the community and then choose five ideas that they liked the
best. We then discussed the most popular ideas and narrowed our list down
to five. We only had two hours to meet, and we all walked out of the room
in agreement that we have five good subject areas for the fall topic.

The decision to include the NDT topic on last fall's CEDA resolutions was
made at our summer meeting in Chicago. We knew the NDT topic and we
decided to include it with our topics. The decision whether or not to
include the NDT topic on the list of fall topics will be made at our summer
meeting. I am interested in input from students and coaches and anyone
that knows me knows that I do listen, and I try to be fair. Pam Stepp
