Re: NDT 95-96 topics proposed
I respectfully disagree with your accusation of a conspiracy by the topic
committee to keep NDT and CEDA apart. It is easy for you to say "no NDT
topic" therefore "it is a conspiracy of the hierarchy" but it is still an
argument which seems to lack validity, at least in my case. I cannot speak
for my colleagues, however. (Russell Chruch, Scott Jensen, Pam Stepp, Steve
Hunt, Josh Hoe....not a very conspiratorial bunch.
Pam Stepp (pls8@cornell.edu) is the chair of this committee. I assume you
contacted her.
You might ponder a little more about the situation before jumping to a
conspiracy theory. For example, we do not know what the NDT topic is, how are
we supposed to put it on the ballot for problem areas? The two committees
meet at the same time usually thousands of miles apart.
If you tell me how we can put the NDT topic (chosen on Bastille Day, or at
least it used to be) on the CEDA ballot unless it is within the problem area
we select without violating our by-laws I will attempt to do it. Otherwise, I
urge you to seek a by-law change.
I wish you had been at the national business meeting at CEDA Nationals. Then
you could have moved that the NDT topic also appear on the topic ballot. It
was moved to include the Fall topic as an option to keep for the Spring, and
now we can mail vote on that. It would be good to consider this as well. Your
considerable leadership would be welcome.
Besides, there will be little potential for merger if we do the NDT topic in
the Fall and then drop it in the Spring. In CEDA the Spring topic is the most
important one. It might be better for us to pick up the NDT topic for the
Spring if you want more crossing over...or maybe not, as CEDA teams might be
loathe to go to tournaments to begin a topic some have a semester head start
on.
Besides, unless CEDA Nationals and NDT Nationals are put on different
weekends not much will happen. If we could arrange that, then you and I could
both attend both business meetings. Or, does NDT have an open meeting? Well,
I'd listen in if I got a chance.
The obvious short term effort if you want more cross over would be to promote
the Latin America topic in both NDT and CEDA. I proposed the Latin America
topic so that this option would be open. Given that I did this, I must assume
that you are not including me in your conspiracy.
I write all of this to continue what has become, for me, a continuing idea
whenever the merger issue comes up. It looks good from a distance, but as we
get closer to it the tough issues become difficult to resolve, and topics is
certainly one of them.
