Clarifying "Syracuse Needs Your HELP!!"

I write in response to Professor Church's call for "guidelines on what to
say to be persuasive with [Chancellor Shaw]". The Chancellor is already
very favorably disposed toward debate, so our goal in asking for letters
is twofold:

* First, to demonstrate to him that our debate colleagues around the
country are favorably disposed toward the Syracuse program, and. . .

* Second, to give him evidence of the value of the activity to share with
the administrators directly below him (one of whom, we hope, will take us
under his/her wing and fund our travel out of his/her budget).

Because the purpose of these letters is to be evidence of our merit, and
not indictments of the system, I join Professor Church's request that
these letters be positive and cool in tenor.

Thank you all again for your efforts on our behalf. Irwin.
