HOLIDAYS
In the 80's CEDA attempted to avoid religious holidays in scheduling the
National Tournament. CEDA also wants to avoid conflicts with other national
tournaments, such as NDT, NIET, etc. Unless the season ends in early March
or late April conflicts will occur. This year MTSU could not have hosted the
national tournament on any other weekend because of lack of rooms due to
Friday classes, Saturday classes, etc. but the Easter weekend meant many of
these events were not held. There were also no other schools who were willing
to host nationals last year. I would have preferred avoiding Easter weekend
myself.
In general the CEDA system of counting only 6 prelim rounds should make
regular season two day tournaments competitive. However, every school has
its own scheduling problems. Moreover, if you add i.e. you usually need
a three day schedule. Finally, two day tournaments do not seem draw well.
I wish that were not the case.
Given all the conflicting holidays and other interests, tournament scheduling
will not become any easier or more satisfactory. Indeed, next year's nationals
may be starting after 4:00 pm on Friday. Hopefully, we will not be debating
at midnight.
