Re: breaking brakets????
I don't see any reason not to break brackets and every reason to. I'll
precede my response to Eric's message by saying that I think Sean's
pre-empts take out. Eric feeds rather than responds.
> 1) the benifits are not the same for all.
The analysis here is that Ball State would have lost to Cornell no
matter where they hit them so they should be allowed to debate a school
against which they have evidence. My first question is, if Cornell had
so many teams how come you didn't have any ev on them? I also know thet
their case list was posted on CEDA-L. Another argument is that you
would have lost to them sooner or later. You're assumption is that they
aren't going to lose so we need to get them out of the way so the
smaller team can advance. I think destroy's the purposes of
outrounds--to find the best team at the tournamnet.
> 2) No real justification for breaking them.
Once agin this argument assumes that these teams are unbeatable.
I think I've come close to defeating some of these teams that seem to be
almighty and powerful and I know that they have lost some rounds, just ask
them. I would refer everyone to Sean and John's articles.
> 3)turny structure.
I think Sean's pre-empt comes in here. If the team is good then
what do they have toi worry. They'd lose anyways, let's try to get the
best team to finals instead of having a bracket that prevents a team
from debating UNTIL finals by merely riding on the other teams' records.
I also think the response to #1 applies.
> 4) team spirit.
I know that Kieran and Paul were happy to see Dave and Babby Joe
win nats, but like Sean said, they proabaly wanted to win it themselves,
and would much rather have closed out the tournament than lose in sems. I
don't see any selfishness in the attitudes, they just want an equal
chance, and breaking brakets will do that.
MY OWN PRE-EMPT: Pepperdien is a small school. We were virtually unknown
this year, and travelled two teams and researched with two sometimes three
people (one person was pledging a fraternity and the other doesn't
research). I don't know if I speak for the rest of Pepperdine, but I
would have rather seen a breaking of brackets at last years Nats and this
years than to see those teams have to sit out.
