CEDA Summer Workshops
I am glad to see there are a lot of opportunities for CEDA debaters --
new and experienced -- to enroll in a summer workshops. I would like to
inform you about some of the features of the Midwest Debate Workshop on
the campus of the University of Missouri of St. Louis.
Administration: The workshop will be administered through a non-profit,
educational organization. Tax exempt status is being sought currently.
The staff is salaried, but this workshop will make profits for no individual,
university or foundation. An "open books" policy will be followed -- all
participants, staff and coaches will be able to examine the financial records
of the workshop.
Costs: Room -- $200; Meals -- $200; Tuition -- $250. No scholarships or
discounts are available. Coaches and staff do not receive reduced or free
tuition for their students. Student fees are not increased so other students
may attend at reduced rates or for free. I believe this package is the best
value for a summer workshop and fees include a day off in St. Louis including
such activities as a Cardinals game, Budweiser Tour, dinner on the "Hill" in
St. Louis. The workshop will feature some recreation breaks during the intense
10 day workshop.
Dates: July 21-31, 1994. The Workshop will be held immediately after the
meeting of the CEDA topic selection meeting in Chicago. These topics will
be used in the workshop.
Staff: This is truly an outstanding staff. Carrie Crenshaw, director of
debate at the University of Alabama, has coached teams to the outrounds at
Nationals and was herself a CEDA final round participant. She is truly one
of the finest coaches in the activity.
Gina Lane, director of debate at William Jewell. Gina has coached teams into
the finals of Nationals. This year her team was in the quarterfinals. She
has also coached a top speaker at Nationals. She is a very experienced coach
and coaches in the toughest region in the United States.
Mark Jones, director of debate at California Lutheran, is a former quarterfinal-ist at the National Tournament. He is an excellent coach and teacher and this
will be his third year in summer workshops. He currently finishing his Ph.D.
at the Annenberg School in LA.
Scott Jensen, director of debate at McNeese, coached a team to the elim rounds
at Nationals in his first year heading this program. He is on the executive
council of Pi Kappa Delta. He is expereinced in coaching and directing at
both high school and college programs.
Glenda Treadaway will be moving to direct the debate program at Appalachian
State in the fall. She was a very successful debater in the Southeast. She
was coached by Don Brownlee and debated for Wingate. She has represented the
Southeast Region on the CEDA executive council. She is one of the bestt
tournament administrators in the nation and has served on the Nationals
Tab Room Committee for the last two years.
Depending on enrollment these other fine coaches may also be staffing the
workshop:
Skip Rutledge, Point Loma
Pat Jablonski, former Emory debater, currently a Ph.D. student at Alabama
Terry Winebrenner, San Luis Obispo
These recent graduates and seniors may also be assisting in the workshop:
Wayne Basinger, University of North Dakota
Pat Gerkhe, CSU-Chico
Matt Simmons, CSU-Chico
Philosophy: The distinctive element of this workshop is its philosophy.
It has a very diverse staff representing a great variety of philosophies
of coaching and judging. Students will be better prepared by being exposed
to the breadth of viewpoints on theory, educational practices, etc. in this
workshop. There will be no one mindset, conservative or liberal, dominating
this workshop. However, the most important principle of this workshop is the
desire to make students competent debaters through becoming independent teachersand thinkers. Coaches will not write your cases for you and will not write
briefs for you. They will give you extensive guidance on how to do thesee
things yourselves.
