... 1930's.1
There are numerous places in the film where the audience is made aware that this is a film. In the first shot of the flashback which continues through the film when the lights come on in the studio, one arc light is directed straight into the camera, hitting the viewer in the eye. At the end of the film, just before the ``The End'' sign is flashed one of the characters on screen says ``Lights. Full lights. Lights On.''
