Windows XP Professional is the supported Windows operating System in our Undergraduate Lab. Throughout the rest of the department, mostly Windows XP Professional is supported for general faculty, staff, and student use, with some machines running Windows 2000 as needed.
1. Because Windows creates a local profile for you when you log onto an Windows machine, which is written to the DC ( Domain Controller), when you log off the machine you should not save anything directly to: "users on 'Fenestra' (Z:)."
2. To avoid problems, just create a folder on your desktop. Name it whatever you like, and save to that folder. This will allow Windows to transfer your data properly from the machine you are working on to the server. This will help prevent any problems with missing files and data.
3. Always be aware of where you are saving your work. SAVE TO THE DESKTOP FOLDER THAT YOU SHOULD CREATE.
4. Your data is your date. Save your important data to a USB thumbdrive, or a floppy, or to another network location (Your Unix Instructional account if you have one) as a backup.
5. Remember that you are allowed 30 MB of server space, which is just enough to save your roaming profile, so get a USB thumbdrive for your extra storage needs. You are responsible for backing up your own data.
6. Clean up your Temporary Internet Files periodically through the browser you use.
7. ALL CS LAB USERS, Please lower the Cache sizes for the browser you use to around 3 to 5 MB, to help save disk space on the DC.
