CS Linux tips

My firefox/mozilla isn't loading?

  • There is a file in your .mozilla/firefox/profile(which is a random string of characters) called lock (for example, .mozilla/firefox/jhjid5mz.default/lock) Normally, it would have been automatically removed when firefox last exited, but sometimes, it does not get removed. Thefore, remove the lock file from your profile, and your mozilla should work correctly. Note, that in some instances, the file might instead be called .parentlock, and therefore, that's the file you would need to remove. However, remember, that to see the existence of a dot (hidden) file, like, .parentlock, you need to use ls -a to view the directory (the -a means to show hidden files as well as non-hidden files.)

How do I change my Linux Screen Resolution?

  • In GNOME (the default environment), click the Redhat menu, and select Preferences -> Screen Resolution. You can change the resolution from there.

How do I receive CS e-mail via pop or imap?

How can I send e-mail using the CS e-mail servers.

  • Grad/Faculty/Researchers/Postdoc/Staff:
    • use secure smtp server pop.cs.jhu.edu (This will eventually be changing to smtp.cs.jhu.edu. Stay tuned...)
    • Choose TLS-based password authentication in your server settings.
    • Use port 25 or 587.
  • Web-based e-mail access is available, but only for Grad students, Faculty, Researchers, Postdoc, and Staff. Those users can point their browsers to http://www.cs.jhu.edu/webmail
  • If you are unable to send mail through the CS mail servers, you can always use JHU's main smtp server, smtp.johnshopkins.edu (SSL-only for this server.)
