To be held jointly with

FORUM OF PARALLEL COMPUTING CURRICULA

The Ninth Annual ACM Symposium on Parallel Algorithms and Architectures (SPAA'97) is sponsored by the ACM Special Interest Groups for Algorithms Complexity Theory (SIGACT) and Computer Architecture (SIGARCH) and organized in cooperation with the European Association for Theoretical Computer Science.

NEW THIS YEAR:

A "SPAA Revue" session will feature invited presentations, posters, and demonstrations of current research. Also, SPAA'97 will be colocated with the 2nd Forum on Parallel Computing Curricula.

CONTRIBUTED PAPERS:

Contributed papers are sought in the areas of parallel algorithms and architectures. A major goal of SPAA is to foster communication and cooperation among the diverse communities involved in the theory and practice of parallel computing, including those involved in systems, algorithm analysis, languages, and applications.

Papers should present original, fundamental advances in the areas covered by the conference. The Symposium especially encourages papers that offer novel approaches to parallel computing, present new ideas in parallel algorithms or architectures (including novel algorithm implementations on real machines, unconventional problem domains, such as very large data sets or internet-based computation, and innovative use of technology), present models for accounting for costs on parallel machines, or study the interaction of parallel algorithms, languages and architectures. Papers must not be submitted to any other conference with published proceedings. Accepted papers will be accompanied by a 25-minute presentation.

SUBMISSIONS:

Authors are invited to send draft papers to:

David E. Culler, SPAA'97 Program Chair
Computer Science Division (#1776)
University of California
Berkeley, CA 94720-1776

The deadline for submissions is JANUARY 17, 1997. Inquiries may be addressed to Ms. Gabriela Aranda (phone: (510) 643-2568; fax: (510) 642-5775; e-mail: aranda@cs.berkeley.edu). (Interested Revue participants should contact gibbons@research.bell-labs.com by Feb. 14, 1997.)

Submission Format and Procedure:

Submit your paper via the automated web form (See instructions) or 16 double-sided hard copies of a draft to the Program Chair. (Questions and problems to spaa97@cs.berkeley.edu). Electronic submissions must be in postscript format and able to be previewed by ghostview. A code will be assigned which should be added to the title page. A text version of the abstract will be requested, as well. The cover page should include (1) title, (2) authors and affiliation, (3) e-mail address of the contact author, and (4) a brief abstract describing the work. The draft should include an introduction understandable to a nonspecialist including motivation and previous work and a technical exposition directed toward a specialist. It should not exceed 10 printed pages in 11-point type or larger (excluding cover, figures, and references). More details may be supplied in a clearly marked appendix to be read at the discretion of the Program Committee.

NOTIFICATION:

Authors will be notified of acceptance or rejection by e-mail and a letter mailed on or before March 3, 1997. A final copy of each accepted paper, prepared according to ACM guidelines, must be received by March 31, 1997.

PROGRAM COMMITTEE:

Program Chair: David E. Culler, UC Berkeley
General Chair: Charles E. Leiserson, MIT
Local Arrangements: Takis Metaxas, Wellesley
Revue Chair: Phillip Gibbons, Bell Labs
Conference Treasurer: Eric Schwabe, Northwestern
Conference Secretary: Robert Cypher, Johns Hopkins
