Information for Advisees

This page is intended as a resource for my undergraduate and graduate student advisees.  Currently, it is rather sparse, but I expect to be filling it in over time.

Getting in touch with me

I tend to be over-scheduled.  Currently I am trying to work out the best standing office hours, although I am almost always available after my class, which meets Thurs-Fri from 1:00 to 2:30.  I typically go from class to my office and will usually be there or in one of the CIS labs (NEB 022 or NEB 026) until around 3:00 pm.

If you need to see me and cannot catch me then, check with my secretary, Elisa Ahmanson (rht_asst@cs.jhu.edu).  Her phone number is 516-0740.  She can either see if I am interruptible or schedule a time.

Four year plans (for undergraduate advisees)

I ask all undergraduate advisees to prepare and maintain a spreadsheet showing what courses they plan to take or have taken by semester and showing how they meet the degree requirements.  Generally, I decline to sign add/drop forms unless the student has this plan up-to-date and has a copy with him or her.  My experience is that this practice can help avoid unpleasant surprises when it comes time to graduate.  It is also a practical necessity for double majors.

Students are free to use their own format or can use the attached template as a starting point.

Two year plans (for grad students)

The CS department generally requires PhD students to complete 8 advanced courses plus two projects in their first two years.  MS students need to complete 10 courses, 8 courses plus two projects, or 8 courses plus a thesis.  Students (especially PhD students) generally take more courses than this and continue to take courses through a third and sometimes a 4th year while working on their thesis.  Generally, I ask grad students to prepare a plan document containing what courses they have taken and what they want to take.  This helps discussion.  The format can be pretty free-form, but something like the attached template is a good starting point.  Try to include the indicated information.

Getting signatures

The best thing to do is to come to see me with the filled out form and your plan.  For routine signatures, you can leave a plan and form with Niccole and she can chase me.  But I reserve the right not to sign if I have any questions.
